Mermaid Smash and Splash | Charlotte Baby Photographer

Look at these two sweet Mermaids on the blog!  I’ve always LOVED the Little Mermaid, in fact, I named my daughter Arielle because I always have loved that name since a child. So when Mom approached me about a Mermaid cake smash, I was over the moon excited!!!

The best part of my photography is watching my clients grow.  I actually first met this family when big brother ( now three) turned one and I photographed his cake smash.  Then I got to see him become a big brother to two sweet sisters.  I’ve watched the sisters grow from womb to one year old and I just love seeing the bond between the three siblings.

We planned the entire mermaid theme session in their home.  We started with some family photos as well as some sibling photos just in their back  yard.  Then we moved inside for the cake smash portion.  I had so much fun planning this mermaid theme.  We chose the colors of teal, purple and coral.  I love the pop of coral, it is different than what I’ve seen and adds a very tropical feel.  The jelly fish were fun process to make.  To make the jelly fish, I painted paper bowels in the same colors.  Then I cut chiffon fabric in purple and coral in round circles and it strips.  To make the chiffon curl in slightly so it looks more like a floppy jelly fish, I used a lighter and slightly burnt the edges until the fabric curled. Then I added tentacle using ribbon, extra fabric and tulle to give it some different texture.  I love how they turned out!  I added my beaded curtain, shells, brown sugar for sand, and some pearls for a under the sea look.  I absolutely love this Mermaid set up and everything came together perfectly!

The session started off a little uneasy.  The girls were super active and was very tough to get even one shot of them on the back drop.  As soon as we sat them down, they would crawl away and no songs, crazy dancing, would distract them long enough.  Then it was clearly time for a little nap.  We had worked so hard on this set up the that I  was willing to try anything to get some nice shots of the two.  So after a short nap, the girls woke up refreshed and ready to go. We quickly started with the cake smash and at first, they were a little unsure, but once e gave them some spoons, the were all about digging in.  We finished the mermaid cake smash with bubble bath of course!! Both the girls were happy in the bath splashing around and having fun.

Enjoy!
