The theme for this colorful cake smash was One in a Melon. I first met this family when little Reagan was in the womb for maternity photos. Mom expressed how much she loves bold colors and it showed even in her maternity photos! She wore two dresses, one being almost the exact same pink used for this Melon cake smash! So when Mom approached me with a watermelon, One in a Melon, cake smash theme, I knew bold pink is a must for this set up. In addition, the One in a Melon theme is perfect for a summer birthday!
It’s always so fun to see how much my little newborn clients grow. Little Reagan at her newborn session was just over 5 lbs! She is to date my smallest newborn! But don’t worry, as you can see in these photos, she did not stay itty and small for long!
Designing this cake smash was son was easy to do since watermelons were in abundance in the grocery stores and craft stores! I found the melon fabric at Hobby lobby and the paper watermelon at party city. I thought this set up would look much better up against a neutral wood backdrop. I had this white wash wood floor drop I use mainly for my newborn session, but it was perfect as a backdrop for this melon cake smash. On the floor, I put down savage seamless paper in tulip to bring in more of the bold pink color, but not go overboard. I think my favorite part of designing this set up was painting the ONE sign like a watermelon! I’ve been having fun decorating ONE letters to match the set up and this one is my favorite so far!
For this session, we met at my home studio. We started with a few family photos just in my backyard. The family photos for cake smash session only take 5-10 mins. 1 year olds do not last long, so we do not want to spend too much time on family portraits and end up having a grumpy baby for the cake smash. But I really do love providing some family photos since it’s not easy surviving that first year! Parents deserved to be recognized too!
After a few family photos, we next went into the fun cake smash. Little Reagan was such a chill and happy baby. We got so many great smiles and interaction. Reagan was not a fan of her cake, as most are not, but she sure did enjoy eating a slice of watermelon! Towards the end of the cake smash portion, Mom really wanted a taste of the delicious cake. She she jumped in and showed Reagan how to enjoy some good cake!
Last, was the bath which Reagan was definitely a fan of! She splashed so much most of the water was out of the basin when we decided enough was enough. She sure did have some fun! Enjoy these One in a Melon photos!
